Easy to install - just do it!

I have five "traditional" two-bulb ceiling fixtures in my basement I've been wanting to replace. The fixtures are unattractive, seem dated, and intrude into the room's headroom. When I found this flush mount light fixture, I decided to try it out and determine if I wanted to purchase another four matching fixtures or if I should simply keep on looking. Installation was trivial. It was 16 minutes from the time I flipped off the circuit to when I flipped it back on. The fixture comes with a base plate it screws into that you attach to the existing electrical box (most ceiling lights should have one). Once you have the plate attached to the box, you clip the safety hook that is already installed on the fixture to the base plate. This ingenious addition allows you to take your time (and use both hands) attaching the electrical wires. Generally, you can simply connect like-colored wires using wire nuts (the included wire nuts were just a bit too small - but you can probably use the wire nuts from the old fixture being replaced). The trickiest part is folding the now-connected wires through the base plate center hole so they don't interfere with the fixture when you screw it back on. The fixture has the lighting components sealed inside. This means that if the light ever malfunctions, you need to replace the entire fixture as opposed to simply replacing a bulb. LEDs are known for their longevity, so it is unlikely to need replacing for many years. But this begs the question if an exact replacement will be available "x years" from now. This is only an issue if you've invested in several of these (for instance, the five I will be installing in the basement) and don't want to mix styles. I intend to pick up an extra or two if I choose to go with this particular style. Before installing it, the fixture felt cheap and plasticky. But once it was on the ceiling it appeared fine from the floor. That said, it really is a light you might find in someone's kitchen, so I don't think it would necessarily work in a formal living room or dining room. Our basement is more of an informal family room with kind of an industrial vibe (the wainscoting is corrugated metal panels), and it works fine in that sort of setting. It truly hugs the ceiling, so we reclaimed a good six inches of headroom. I generally purchase 6000K (bright daylight) lights, but I found I actually prefer the 5000K this fixture produces. It's a more natural light (in my opinion) and easier on the eyes. It tends to produce a uniform "cone" of light about 12 feet across, spreading out on the floor, with very little illuminating the ceiling and walls (unless they are within this "cone"). If you have a room much larger than 12 feet you probably need several of these so their "cones" overlap to get uniform illumination. I've only used this fixture for a couple of hours, so I can't speak to its longevity. If issues come up, I'll update this review. I still have a few more fixtures to test, so the jury is still out as to whether these will be the replacement fixtures or if I'll use something else.
