Good image width and resolution. Poor dynamic range and backlight correction.
I was initially planning to keep this camera, but after writing my review, I am not so sure. I am very disappointed in the image quality. The lack of Wide Dynamic Range, lack of backlight correction, and shorter vertical coverage, have given me worse images than the 4-year-old 8MP camera it is intended to replace. The Good: 1. The 180° width provided by the two stitched camera images is very good. I like the extra width of the coverage. 2. The combined resolution of the stitched images is very good. 3. The camera connected to the Reolink app quickly and easily The Bad: 1. The vertical field of view is only 53°, down from the 59.1° for my old camera. That is enough of a difference that I can no longer capture my full front yard and the cars and sidewalk across the street. I must choose to sacrifice one of those. 2. If I enable either the spotlight or the IR lights, I get a wide glare streak down the middle of the stitched image that makes it unusable. I had to turn off the spotlight and IR lights, but I don't think that they added much value, so that is a minor negative. 3. The dynamic range and backlight correction is, surprisingly, vastly inferior to that of the 4-year-old camera it replaces. This is my biggest disappointment. My previous camera was an 8MP Hikvision Acusense DarkFighter turret camera that had WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) and impressive BLC (backlight correction). Those capabilities kept images from being overwhelmed and blown out due to changing light conditions. My old camera always had clear images, even when the shifting sun or evening lights created difficult lighting conditions. This Reolink camera fails under similar conditions, both during the day and at night. During the day, areas of the ground in direct sunlight become nothing more than bright glaring white blobs with zero detail. At night, the porch lights of neighbors cause a similar problem, with the porch lights completely blowing out a large portion of the image. If I adjust settings to prevent brightly lit areas from overwhelming the image, other parts of the image become too dark to see. I have attached a couple of examples that show the light processing problems at night and during the day. The evening Reolink image shows a neighbor's porch light completely blowing out the detail in a large portion of the image. The noon Reolink image shows how my gray pavers with dark polymeric sand become nothing but a big white smear with zero detail in areas of direct sunlight. The noon Hikvision image shows the same area with the paver details completely visible.
