Customer's headline
Underwhelmed and Unimpressed (disappointed, actually)
First off, the pouches are not as durable as claimed and I've already had several break from normal moving of the totes. I highly doubt these would actually last 25 years without the ultimate in gentle care and climate control, and even then I'd bet against it. (Note the warranty is only for 365 days btw.) Many of the pouches are reclosable, and as such are flimsy plastic bags inside of the thin mylar. Who knows how much breakdown and microplastic infiltration might occur over time and in hotter environments. Second, if you normally eat clean (no preservatives, no artificial sweeteners or food colorings, nothing highly processed, etc.), there's about half of this stuff that's inedible and only usable as barter or absolute-emergency-eat-this-or-die type calories. If you can get past the worst of the ingredients and the hyper-processed nature of the product, still only about half of what's left taste good enough to eat (and when I say "eat", don't make the mistake of thinking I mean "enjoy"). The ingredients listed are the least offensive of the bunch. If you read labels, you'll be shocked at how many garbage ingredients they failed to mention in the listing. Notice how they don't give a full list or image of the actual nutrition facts. Of all the calories in what I purchased, fully 50% are in the "barter only, do not consume" category, 23% are in the "yes" category (half of that is Mac n cheese and white rice--not impressive, and likely more expensive), and 27% in the "maybe" category because I haven't tried them yet. Not great numbers for the price. I did a trial run living off this stuff as my main calorie source, made it less than 2 weeks before I felt like absolute garbage and the plumbing was all stopped up, if you catch my meaning. If you're looking to stock up on survival food you'd be better off with staples like rice and beans in airtight containers, and canned fruits and veggies. AND you could do it for cheaper than buying this packaged processed stuff. If you want to go freeze dried, camp meals from Mountain House and Peak Refuel are smaller portions, cook in the package, require a fraction of the water, and taste a hell of a lot better. Oh, and there are way fewer processed garbage ingredients in them. Mountain House is the cleanest ingredient-wise. 4Patriots food: Nutritionally weak, highly processed, requires larger cookware and a steady heat source for 20+ minutes, significant cleanup, not stealthy at all. Freeze dried camp meals: Fewer processed ingredients, WAY more protein in the meals, cooks in its own package (no cleanup), mylar pouch is more durable than 4Patriots (i.e. longer shelf life probably), ready in 10-15 min with 2 cups water or less usually, can be prepared just about anywhere in less than half the time. Not to mention if you're in an actual emergency situation, the 4Patriots product is WAY harder to cook while maintaining a low profile, constant stirring means open pot and detectable smells (by hungry animals and humans). Mountain House is a closed-top pouch that uses water boiled on a small portable stove in minutes. Basically, superior in every way that matters. It was an experiment I did, that I learned a lot from, and the takeaways were these: Some freeze dried food can do for short periods but actual fruits and veggies are essential. I would NEVER buy any food product from 4Patriots; I can stock up better and cheaper by putting it together myself from dry staples and canned goods. Basically the use-case for 4Patriots is to have "food" to barter or donate, that also makes it look like you're struggling sustenance-wise (because if you're eating 4Patriots, you are). Photo is the "lasagna style marinara", which is an accurate representation of every package that contains any red "sauce" (which is primarily tomato powder).
