Great for the price. One caveat, though...
I bought a dirt cheap 335i that was riddled with oil leaks by neglected maintenance with the previous owners. I originally thought I could get by with just the OEM valve cover gasket, but turns out the brittle plastic cover was cracked. There was no way it could be saved. So I was browsing around for a replacement cover. The OEM plastic cover is EXPENSIVE. And the plastic aftermarket units are the same price as these aluminum ones. The question is... Which is better? I took a gamble with the aluminum because it won't degrade over time like plastic will. Plastic is purely a cost saving measure by manufacturers... Aluminum is just as lightweight and much stronger (depending on the casting, of course.) Plus, it looks better. When it showed up, I immediately ditched the included gasket and PCV. I used an OEM Elring valve cover gasket and an upgraded aluminum PCV valve. Looking over the valve cover itself, it is actually a really nice piece. Everything was machine flat and smooth. No burs in the casting at all, which pleasantly suprised me for the price. I wasn't expecting much honestly. I was ultimately prepared to be disappointed, but I wasn't. At all. It has a really nice powder coating job on it. It's a nice silver color with metallic flake. It really is a pretty unit. It's quite heavier than the plastic cover, but it is A LOT meatier. You CANNOT reuse the factory bolts. The factory bolts have sleeves that the aluminum valve cover isn't machined to clear. You will have to use the included bolts but they are STRONG 8.8 bolts. I applied way too much torque to them on accident due to a uncalibrated torque wrench. The bolts took all the torque and the cover itself showed no signs of deformation or cracking. BUT, you WILL need a thread locker of some kind. The bolts immediately backed out during the first heat cycle causing oil to dump all into my coil packs. Retorqued them initially and they backed out again. The 3rd time I gave up and resulting to the thread lock. And I haven't had an issue since. No leaks with the OEM gasket. No crankcase pressure issues with the upgraded PCV. And it looks way better than the factory cover. Also, another bonus, you don't need a special long 10mm socket to access the coil ground studs. This cover doesn't have the stud wells like the OEM cover does. So this valve cover is also an upgrade with accessibility for future maintenance as well. Overall. 9/10. If they included thread sealant, an OEM gasket, and an upgraded PCV it would be a 10/10 all day long - but you really can't complain with the price. Have a leaky N54 valve cover? Buy this.
